Table Music

Posted by David Bowles on Thursday, May 26, 2011

Now here’s a quandary for you.

Many of you remember the Bethany Grill.  That location, now home to Bethany Physical Therapy, went through a few restaurant operators over the years. Many of our customers counted the owner, Les, as a friend and still lament his moving on.  The Grill’s restaurant never seemed to thrive but the bar seemingly did well.  There was often live music there and, when we first started our business, we‘d often lounge in our empty dining room listening to the whooping and hollering across the parking lot.

And then our business got better. We would … Read the rest »

Yogurt Anybody?

Posted by David Bowles on Thursday, May 26, 2011

Things moved very quickly last month in the “Janet’s Irish Pub” department. Just when we got our plans into final form and were meeting contractors we bumped up against a fellow with the intention of opening a “serve yourself frozen yogurt” shop. He stepped up and made an offer to lease the space next door. So, for now, it appears that “the next big thing” will be yogurt, and not “Janet’s Irish Pub”.

One of my life’s guiding philosophies is that it is very difficult to make lemonade without lemons. Frankly, doubling the size of the business by adding on … Read the rest »

It’s What’s Happening Baby

Posted by David Bowles on Thursday, May 26, 2011

We marvel at how the cosmos is imbued with perfect wisdom and long for just a dribble of that wisdom from time to time. Hindsight provides the best cues for our faith that everything happens for a reason and it is reassuring to know that, some day, current events will make sense. Until then we simply endeavor to remain nimble and continue to adapt to our customers’ needs, concerns and desires.

The outdoor dining season was good to us. It is still alive but the fall chill makes it inherently less appealing, although diners basking in the warmth of our … Read the rest »

Three Great Southern Oregon Wineries – and a fly-over on biodynamic farming

Posted by Allea on Thursday, May 26, 2011

The organization of AVA’s (American Viticultural Areas) in Southern Oregon is a little confusing. The Southern Oregon AVA was created in 2004 as a “super-AVA”, incorporating both the Rogue Valley and Umqua Valley AVA’s. Applegate Valley is a sub-AVA of the Rogue. Umqua Valley also has its own sub-AVA, the little known “Red Hill Douglas County, Oregon AVA”, which was clearly named by a committee.

For our current series we have selected two wines from Cowhorn Vineyard: a 2007 Syrah and a 2009 Grenache Rose. Cowhorn is a relatively young winery that has achieved remarkable success given their youth,

Janet’s Irish Pub & David’s Life As A Visionary

Posted by David Bowles on Thursday, May 26, 2011

People think it’s easy to be me, and, well… I guess they’re right. I have a pretty good gig as the BT “Director of Customer Experience”. For some reason it seems like it’s easier for me than it is for the people around me, but I can’t explain it. You could ask them but they’re too busy getting the work done to think about it. Regardless, it hasn’t always been a picnic.

It’s hard to be a visionary with poor depth perception. I’ve always been able to see what’s coming, just never sure when. It’s like I have lazy eye … Read the rest »

Every once in a while we like to do something really fun and special.  This time we decided to collaborate with Tamarack Cellars of Walla Walla to host a dinner featuring Tamarack’s winemaker Danny Gordon and a great lineup of wines.  Although Saturday night is a busy in the restaurant, we decided that it is worth clearing the decks in order to do something really great. We will feature seven wines paired with six spectacular courses prepared by Janet. Ninkasi Beer & The Dawn of Civilization

Posted by David Bowles on Saturday, November 6, 2010

In southern Mesopotamia the Sumerians tended the cradle of civilization. There in the land we now refer to as Iraq they laid the foundation stones to life as we know it. They invented the wheel, the plow and most common tools; they began writing and accounting, created the modern clock and calendar, developed irrigation and… they invented beer.

Nestled between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the Sumerians created systems and structures to manage the abundance of agriculture and the first-ever concentration of people. For these people, beer was life. Some believe that beer was in fact the point of civilization. Read the rest »

Halloween!

First we watched the Ducks game on our new 55″ screen. ThenTerry Robb Tri played. Baked oysters, salmon, squid ink-dyed past with King salmon and many other great dishes were served throughout the course of the evening. We laughed ’til we dropped. Here are some photos.… Read the rest »
